Negotiating Remuneration
In a current position
Check your contract and the company's policy on pay increases.
Be clear and be able to cite examples of major accomplishments where you significantly contributed to the bottom line.
Book a meeting for the discussion with your boss and keep your language positive.
Avoid comparing yourself to co-workers. Only compare yourself to the job you have been doing.
Avoid muddying the discussion with personal financial issues. The way to get an increase is to prove that your contribution to the business is worth more.
Be prepared. Chances are that your boss has had more of these discussions than you have. Check your performance against your job description and be able to confidently demonstrate your value.
Reassure your employer of your committment to stay and progress within the company.
At interview
Clarify the remuneration of the position BEFORE you go to the interview.
Know your value by doing your market research around both your value and the typical salary level of the job you are interviewing for.
Research job boards and speak to specialist recruiters who will be able to reassure you of your market value.
If the client promises an increase within a certain time frame then ask them to detail this in writing.
